How Orthodontic Treatment Works
With the today's latest orthodontic advances, any age is a great age to wear braces! LONG GONE are the days when big metal rings were placed around each tooth and "tightening" was expected at monthly adjustment visits. Now, the braces we use are are small "micro" metal or clear ceramic brackets that are bonded to the outside or inside of the teeth. Also, computer programmed clear plastic removable aligners like Invisalign and invisalign Teen increasingly popular. Todays orthodontic wires are far less noticeable, and the newest wires are designed to be activated by your body heat to work very gently over long periods so they move teeth faster more comfortably! So, this means that most braces adjustment to be need only every 6 - 10 weeks! With the newest technology available, the wires used with some braces can even be clear or tooth colored to match your teeth for the best look possible. Whichever appliance you choose, the magic of orthodontics works by placing a constant, gentle force in a carefully controlled direction to slowly move teeth to the proper position.
Duration of Treatment
As you might expect, the length of individual orthodontic treatments can vary depending on complexity of tooth movements, age, types of braces used, patient cooperation and treatment goals. So, most treatments can last from 6 to 36 months. A big factor in a successful treatment is you! For children, receiving interceptive or early treatment for developing problems (what we sometimes call "damage control"!) can help provide a quicker and better results when it is time for their full braces..
